Letters
Dear Marlen,
I just want to thank you for teaching us this concept of the monomyth. When I first read your emails this summer, I was scared out of my mind. But as they say, “never just a book by its cover,” so I gave it a shot. I’m very thankful I did, because I’m loving the class so far! I have accomplished a lot so far from this one class. I feel that I can watch any movie or read any book and predict how the story will play out. I feel that I better understand stories in general now. I feel this is a great tool because for the few stories I could never grasp, this will help me understand them.
I really enjoy how laid-back the class feels. You have done a good job at creating a relaxing atmosphere for us students. I feel more inclined to voice my opinion because it’s so casual.
I do feel that we have quite a bit of readings and for those like me that have some writing intensive classes already within our major, I feel it’s a little unfair. Not that it isn’t worthwhile, because I feel that it all is very entertaining and interesting, but I feel that some of us have a much larger work load than the others. If some of the supplemental readings were reduced by just a bit, then I feel it wouldn’t be as difficult to keep up with this class AND our other classes.
I really hope to be able to look at life through a new set of eyes after this class. It seems more to me like a “soul searching” class than a literature class. And I feel that’s a pretty good thing.
Sincerely,
Kim Siverling
